Elis and Signe Olsson Professor R. Edward Freeman is academic director at the Business Roundtable Institute for Corporate Ethics and Darden's Initiative for Business in Society (IBiS). From 1987 to 2009, he was director of Darden's Olsson Center for Applied Ethics, one of the world's leading academic centers for the study of ethics. He currently serves as a senior fellow of the Olsson Center for Applied Ethics.
Freeman is perhaps best known for his award-winning book Strategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach, originally published in 1984 and reprinted 2010 by Cambridge University Press, in which he suggests that businesses build their strategy around their relationships with key stakeholders.
He is the author or editor of more than 20 volumes in the areas of stakeholder management, business strategy and business ethics as well as more than 100 articles in a wide variety of publications. At its 2010 annual meeting, the Society for Business Ethics gave its "Outstanding Contributions to Scholarship Award" to Freeman, noting that there were more than 12,000 citations to his work on stakeholder theory.
